Welcome to the web site of NTEU Chapter 78!
The Presidents Corner:
To all members, thank you for entrusting me with the office of president of NTEU Chapter 78. It has been a very challenging experience that has taught me a lot about human nature and the need for unity in the workplace. Though there have been many challenges, there have been many more opportunities for me to learn how to improve our work environment, to increase the awareness of all members regarding local and national issues, and to understand the overall work that is done so efficiently and effectively in this facility.
There have been a lot of tough times in the past year, but there have been some high points as well. We have increased our membership, locally, to a level higher than it has ever been. We have worked with the health and safety committee and the SCR to enhance the emergency policies and notification practices. We have worked with the building management to provide proper notice to employees regarding installation of materials to minimize potential health related irritants from affecting the building population and causing work interruptions.
We fought for and won new positions in various operating divisions, proper placement for several employees previously impacted by the RIF, and we have successfully negotiated reduction in disciplinary actions for multiple cases that would have resulted in termination or suspension. We have helped many employees find ways to take care of ailing family members by guiding them through the process to apply for and gain approval under the Family Medical Leave Act. We have increased the opportunity for employees to receive supplemental health coverage and have sought other opportunities to enhance benefits to the members of NTEU. All of these things benefit the total membership.
As we look forward to the balance of this year, we continue to weather the storms of the new badge requirements, operation RED, the on again/off again SEAT Management reorganization, the proposed move of our mainframe, and so much more.
Major topics for NTEU this year include, but are not limited to such issues as, the administrations attempts to close the tax gap, the annual battle over the pay raise for civilian employees, the latest amendment to stop private tax collection, the ongoing restructuring of one or more operating divisions and working with issues that arise as a result of having off-site managers.
My hope is that as we move through the rest of this year, each member will see a need to contribute to the continued success of NTEU Chapter 78. If we want our Chapter to be better, we must put forth the effort to make it so. Volunteer for a committee, participate in a workshop, come out to a lunch and learn, work on the newsletter or website, or become a steward. Use your talents to benefit the needs of the entire membership. We need you!
